Sundridge got its name because The post office changed it from Sunny Ridge. It was called Sunny Ridge because of the way the sun came up over the ridge above Stoney Lake..

The first school buses in the area were horse drawn wagons. The horses pulled a wooden covered wagon. It had benches down both sides and a wood stove in the middle to keep the children warm.
That Lake Bernard is the largest lake in the world without an island.

Our first agricultural hall was built in 1893 and cost a total of $18 to build. It was built by Mr. Wm. Paget.
Indians in the area showed early pioneers the great natural resource of Maple Syrup. Today, it is still one of our greatest resources and a sweet treat today, just as it was when the Indians shared their greatest pleasure with us.

The 162nd Battalion took up residence in Sundridge, from May 22 through to August 16, 1916. The recruits were paid 25 cents a day during basic training. The men came from around the area (Parry Sound, Dunchurch, McKellar, Burk’s Falls, Emsdale, Rosseau, Katrine, Novar, Scotia Junction, Sundridge, South River, Trout Creek, Powassan, Magnetawan, Uplands, Loring, Spring Creek, Pearcely, Doe Lake, Chishom, Fern Glen, Astorville, and Restoule.)

Early settlers had to walk to Magnetawan to get groceries or even mail.

The First cat in Sundridge came from Magnetawan. Sam McGee walked to Magnetawan one cold winter’s day to purchase groceries. Outside the store a young kitten caught his eye. The kitten followed him despite his efforts to shoo it away. It was getting late and Sam had to hurry home. It was cold and dark out, the poor kitten continued to follow. Being soft hearted, Sam picked up the kitten and took it home. The kitten was a female and as luck would have it, his neighbour later acquired a male. The Village was happy to welcome the future offspring of The Red Ribbon Kitty. These young cats helped rid many barns of mice and other rodents.

Strong Lodge No. 423 was instituted September 9, 1889. The Masonic Lodge held their meetings in the Orange Hall From 1900 to 1930’s.

That the first doctor in our town was Dr. Toole. He carried out his practice in the early 1800’s. The second was Dr. Andrew Carmichael. He came to Sundridge in the 1890’s. Dr. Andrew arrived next and died in a flu epidemic in 1918. Dr. Roy Malyon took up residence on Dec. 2, 1918 and left the area in 1926.
